Path description:
The starting point is a village called Mátala, on the southern coast of Crete island in Greece.
At the crossroads at a picturesque snag of the olive tree from which the artist Spyros Stefanakis cut out the facial sculptures, head into the village and walk by souvenir shops and restaurants.
In a small square, follow the sign for a "Red beach", i.e., the street on the left-hand side (and not a road that goes closer to the coast).
In just a few meters, turn right and then immediately left. When you reach the stairs, you will see a path that begins just to the left of the stairs. Follow this path to the saddle of Cape Mátala (Ákra Mátala), where an unmarked trail branches off to Koules of Mátala / Mátala tower; Gr. Κουλές Ματάλων) just a minute of walking distance away.
Follow the trail and pass another local peak of 85 meters. At that point you will soon reach the fence and the shepherd's gate, where the trail begins to descend. After 10 minutes you will reach Red beach.
The description and images refer to the situation from August 2022.
