From Kranjska Gora over the border crossing Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio. Further, we drive on the old road towards Videm / Udine. Already after few kilometers from Trbiž / Tarvisio, the road into Ovčja vas / Valbruna branches off to the left. Here we turn left and we follow the road all the way to the mountain pasture Zajzera, where we park on a large parking lot.
Path description:
From the parking lot from where there is a very nice view towards the northern wall of Montaž we go on the path 611 on the right side of the chapel. We follow the signs for mountain hut Rifugio Grego and already at the beginning we start relatively steeply ascending through the forest, and later we also few times cross a macadam road which also leads towards the mountain hut Rifugio Grego. After that, the path turns slightly to the right and it brings us on a forested ridge from which a view opens up a little on the northern side. For a better view, we need to step on some of panoramic points on the edge of the ridge and in doing so some caution is needed because the ridge is precipitous on the northern side.
Further, we are still ascending through the forest and occasionally beautiful views opening up towards Montaž and Viš. Such a path we then follow all the way to the mountain hut Rifugio Grego where there is a breathtaking view mainly towards Montaž.
Macadam road at the mountain hut turns right and leads towards the nearby mountain pass Rudni vrh (Sella di Sompdogna), and we walk on a footpath to the signposts behind the mountain hut. To the left leads the path 611 towards the bivouac Stuparich, and we continue straight on the path 651, which leads towards the lake Laghetto di Somdogna and forward towards Krniška glavica (Jof di Sompdogna).
The path from the mountain hut is for some time ascending through the forest, and a little higher becomes less steep and turns slightly to the right. Out of the forest the path then brings us to a clearing on which there is lake Laghetto di Somdogna.
The path bypasses the lake on the right side, and then it again ascends and brings us into larch forest where we come to a crossing.
We go left on the path 610 towards the summit Krniška glavica (Jof di Sompdogna) and we start ascending even a little steeper through the forest. Higher the forest becomes thinner and views start opening up on the ridge of Malborghetto mountains. The slope then for some time becomes less steep and the path leads us past some ruins from the time of the first world war. Here we walk through mostly larch forest and then the path turns a little to the right and it brings us on a slope partly vegetated with dwarf pines. The path here again starts ascending steeper and then for quite some time still runs by dwarf pines. From the path also nice views start opening up on the eastern and northern side where we can see Viš and Montaž. In the last part also the dwarf pines by the path become rarer and on a panoramic path we soon reach the peak on which there is a cross. Few ten meters before the peak we will by the path also notice few military ruins and trenches. One of the structures is converted into a smaller bivouac.
