Veliki Medvejk / Monte Orsario

Description of mountain:
Veliki Medvejk (also Medvedjak or Medvedjek; italian Monte Orsario) is 472 meters high hill northwest from Sežana (air distance about 3 km). Over the peak runs the national border between Slovenia and Italy, as evidenced by some border stones on the very summit and information board by the footpaths on the Italian side, when they get close to the border. On the Italian side the surroundings of the hill is included in "landscape park" "Riserva Naturale del Monte Orsario", which includes the territory between the national border and the road Fernetiči - Repentabor.

On the summit on the Italian side of the border there is a smaller panoramic platform. Below it there is a box with an inscription book and bilingual stamp. Quite surprising there areby any benches, so we can take a rest only on one of numerous rocks. There also arent any panorama boards with descripton of the view.

With the exception of the very peak the hill is almost entirely covered with typical karst vegetation. From the panorama platform in nice weather views open up on the nearby surroundings, on Repentabor church, with some luck all the way to the Alps, and from the vantage point on the Slovenian side and also towards Sežana with surroundings.

From the Italian side the peak is accessible on more well-marked paths from Fernetiči or Repentabor. From the Slovenian side it was closed until the "border fall", and today it is accessible on unmarked and poorly beaten footpaths from Sežana or Vrhovlje.
