Access to starting point:
From central Slovenia on Gorenjska highway to exit Hrušica and through the valley Zgornja Savska dolina past Rateče towards Trbiž / Tarvisio. On western end of Trbiž we go on the main road SS13 towards Videm / Udine. We leave the road before Humin / Gemona dei Friuli and on a local road to the center of the town. Right before it is on the left turn-off of Panorama road which is in 34th zig-zags ascending gently to agrotourism on the mountain pasture Karman. We leave the road on one of zig-zags, on which branch of steep concrete transport road branches off to the left. After 200 meters we drive to the parking lot in front of the bridge of a torrent Torrente Vegliato.
Path description:
From the parking lot are possible two approaches to a saddle Predol above the mountain pasture Karman. First runs like this: few meters before the parking lot rocky footpath branches off to the right, which is in long turn ascending above the riverbed of the stream Vegliato to a crossroad (approx. 800 meters). Branch of the footpath branches off to the left, which crosses a riverbed of the stream Vegliato, where then joins the second version of the approach on the mountain pasture. And we continue on the main branch of the footpath right. There we are ascending in long zig-zags on a steep, shallow gully to the edge of forested broad ridge, where we turn left and by a clearing in a gentle ascent, we continue past holiday cottages to the nearby agrotourism.
Second approach – compared to first preferable in case of direct ascent on Veliki Karman – runs like this: concrete transport road is from the bridge ahead ascending for a kilometer in zig-zags parallel with gravel riverbed with dams regulated stream Vegliato. Then it ends and passes into a footpath, on which after approximately 100 meters we come to a crossing. The footpath branches off to the right, which crosses a riverbed of a torrent Vegliata and joins first version of the approach on the mountain pasture. And our path goes from the crossing straight for some time parallel with the riverbed of a torrent. And soon also this footpath splits: bottom branch goes all the time parallel with riverbed, and the upper turns a little to the left, but at around 970 meters join again. When we reach nearby saddle Predol we join wide footpath which is in short zig-zags winding on a steep slope towards Karman.
The footpath is at first winding by the edge of the forest, after that in numerous short zig-zags on steeper and steeper grassy slope to crumbly rocky terrain by the edge of precipitous gully. There we are ascending over numerous smaller bands diagonally left below the rocky outgrowth, which we bypass, and then with the help of fixed safety gear we continue over ledges (passage Gospodična, Passo della Signorina, 1359 m; by the path is a memorial plaque to two Friulian mountaineers). From there over a short, broken and quite crumbly, but not too steep wall, above which we continue over more bands, after that in zig-zags on a steep upper grassy slope straight on a panoramic peak.
