Description of mountain:
Wilder Freiger (Italian: Cima Libera) is one of the most famous and visited peaks in the central part of the highest chain of the Stubai Alps, Hochstubai. It lies on the border ridge between North and South Tyrol, or between the Austrian and Italian parts of Tyrol. The reason for its considerable popularity is that it offers numerous approach options, including one of the least demanding routes to a prominent summit in the heart of Hochstubai, its status as a waypoint on the popular "7 Summits of Stubai" circuit, and the proximity of high-alpine huts Becherhaus (3,195 m) and Müller Hütte (3,145 m), located above the extensive Übeltalferner glacier below Wilder Freiger.
Ambitious mountaineers often traverse Wilder Freiger as part of the classic high-alpine route through the central Hochstubai group, where they ascend neighboring Wilder Pfaff and Zuckerhütl via more demanding routes.
The summit provides a magnificent view into the heart of the High Stubai and its peaks above vast glaciers; also appealing are the views of Wilder Pfaff (3,456 m) and its east ridge, the sharp Zuckerhütl (3,507 m), the highest peak of the Stubai Alps, and the vista toward the Stubai Valley and its surrounding peaks.
