Carbonin - Monte Fumo / Rauhkofel

Access to starting point:
Access from Gorenjska: Over the border crossing Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio, where we go on the highway in the direction of Videm / Udine. We leave the highway at exit Tolmezzo and we follow the road to the mentioned settlement. From Tolmezzo we continue in the direction of the settlement Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo della Mauria. The road then starts descending and brings us into a valley Cadore, where we continue right (left Belluno and Cortina d'Ampezzo) in the direction of the settlement Auronzo. After few additional km of driving, we come to the next bigger crossroad, where we go right in the direction of the settlement Misurina (left mountain pass Tre Croci). From here we descend on the road to a bigger crossroad (right Dobbiaco and Austria, left Cortina d'Ampezzo). A little before the mentioned crossroad we will on the left side of the road notice a larger parking lot on which we park.
From Primorska side: We drive on the highway which leads over the border crossing Sežana in Trst / Trieste. Further, we drive on Italian highway in the direction of Padova, but only to a highway junction, where we continue in the direction of Veneto and Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends, and we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo and Auronzo. When the road brings us into a valley Cadore we will get to a bigger crossroad, where the road goes towards Cortina d'Ampezzo left, and towards Auronzo right. Here we continue right towards Auronzo. Further, we follow the description above.

Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue approximately 200 meters on the main road in the direction towards Misurina. Two macadam roads will then branch off to the right. We go on secnd road following the signs Cortina.
For some time we then walk on the mentioned road which is popular among cyclists. From the right will join also two narrower roads, and then the road soon brings us to a wooden fence, where the cart track branches off to the left. By the cart track we will on the trees also notice some old blazes.
We go on the mentioned cart track on which we are then ascending through the forest. Cart track then brings us near the riverbed of a torrent where passes into a footpath. Further, we all the time we walk by the riverbed of a torrent, which is in the lower part usually without water. From the path which runs through the valley named Val Della Fontana di Sigismondo nice views opening up on the nearby peaks above us and on the mountain Croda Rossa on northwest.
Higher, the path by the riverbed becomes poorly visible, therefore we have to pay quite some attention, that we notice scree where our path from the riverbed turns left upwards (at an altitude of approximately 1800 meters).
After the ascent over the scree path again turns to the left and is then ascending diagonally towards the northeast. The path here runs mostly by dwarf pines, and occasionally also crosses some scree. Such a path then brings us to military tunnel on the south side of the peak Monte Fumo.
From here on, the path becomes demanding and because of smaller rockfall also quite dangerous and hardly passable. After the crossing of rockfall path brings us on the ledge on which we continue left and it brings us on the northern side of the mountain. Here we will soon come to a poorly visible crossing, where from the left side joins also northern path.
At the crossing, we continue right upwards and we at first ascend a little steeper, and then follows a little less steep path by dwarf pines to a panoramic summit.
