Access to starting point:
The starting point is Sappada in Italy (Udine province), the postal code is 32047. One way reaches Sappada via Tolmezzo through Villa Santina, Comeglians and Forni Avoltri. Another alternative reaches Sappada from the west via Santo Stefano di Cadore, where the road forks to Sappada. The starting point is at the parking place at the lower chairlift station on the eastern side on the outskirts of Cima Sappada.
Path description:
The track begins directly under the chairlift where signposts mark different directions. Follow the track no. 321 in the direction west along the meadow. Soon, a less visible trail forks left directly up through the forest (the fork is not well-marked and the trail is slightly overgrown with dense vegetation in some sections), but it is better to follow the track further. Within few minutes, the track joins the skiing slope, where it makes a 180° turn. Not long after that, the trail and track join together again. The track slowly ascends and it eventually regains its westbound direction. In this section, a trail again forks left up the forest (not recommended, the trail was damaged in the autumn 2018 by the severe storms, and by the end of 2019 the trail was still closed), nevertheless, it is again better to continue west. The track soon joins the ski slope. Follow the steep ski slope up. This section offers great vistas to the Sappada below and to the Piccolo Siera above. The slope turns left and rejoins the closed trail. From here, follow two long turns to the hut Monte Siera (it. Rifugio Monte Siera).
From the hut, follow the ski run to the upper left side to the top of the ski surface lift. Beyond this point, the narrow trail forks off and leads up through the pine bushes. After reaching the rocky terrain, begin the long traverse around the mountain Cima Dieci (it is 2151 m high). Along the way, you will come across the partly difficult section that is secured with steel ropes. After circling the mountain Cima Dieci, the trail reaches the tree line and leads into the beautiful high mountain valley (it. Vallone della Creta Forata). Follow the valley west until the trail gets steeper. The trail to Creta Forata and Creton di Tul forks off to the left soon in the early steep sections of the trail at around 2000 meters of altitude (the way markings are somewhat scarce in this section).
Continue uphill for a little more than 150 meters of altitude (switchback trail) and turn left (the right trail leads to Creton di Tul).
The left trail soon gains about 100 meters of elevation until it begins to traverse the slopes to the east. The trail gets more difficult, where some easy scrambling is necessary. Nevertheless it never exceeds UIAA-. Expect gravel on the trail in some sections. Afterward, the trail steepens again, and with some easy scrambling, you will reach the saddle, where an eastern face of Creta Forata opens up. Some scrambling is still necessary for a few short sections, and you will reach the summit. A summit-cross stands on the top and a summit-stamp is also available in the vicinity. A beautiful view opens up on the top.
On the way: Rifugio Monte Siera (1607m), Vallone della Creta Forata (1850m)
