Access to starting point:
From highway Ljubljana - Jesenice we go to the exit Brezje, Radovljica or Lesce, and then we continue driving in the direction of Begunje na Gorenjskem. When we get to Begunje we drive through the center of the settlement, at the crossroads we follow the signs for castle Grad Kamen and mountain hut Dom v Dragi. On the other side of the settlement main road turns right towards Tržič, and we continue straight on a narrower road which quickly leads into a valley Dolina Draga. A short time we drive on an asphalt road, and then the asphalt ends and the road brings us to the parking lot in front of the mountain hut Dom v Dragi. Because in front of the mountain hut only guests are allowed to park, we continue right, and after good 100 meters of additional driving, we park on one of the two large macadam parking lots.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the road which past a bee house in few minutes of walking, it brings us to a crossing, where we continue right in the direction of the mountain pasture Preval over Luknja (left mountain pasture Planinca, mountain pasture Poljška planina and Roblekov dom). The path ahead crosses the stream and is then for some time ascending gently on the bottom of the valley.
Further, valley narrows and the path in a moderate ascent brings us to narrow gully, through which with the help of fixed safety gear we ascend steep upwards.
A short secured part technically isn't that difficult, but it is exposed to falling stones.
Higher, the path brings us from the gully, where then for some time continues along the stream. Next follows an ascent on shorter ladder (undemanding), and then the path passes into the forest, where we continue until we get on a worse road.
The mentioned road, we follow only few steps, and then blazes point us to the right on a marked footpath which continues on and by the cart track. Higher, the cart track finally turns into a footpath which goes a little more to the right and starts steeper and steeper ascending. This in the last part relatively steep path, we follow all the way to the mountain pasture Preval-e, which we reach after few minutes of additional walking.
From a cross on Prevala we continue towards the north on a marked footpath in the direction of Begunjščica over Kalvarija (left Roblekov dom over Roža, right Ljubelj and Podljubelj). The path ahead at first ascends on a panoramic grassy slope, and then passes into the forest through which it starts ascending steeper. Higher, the forest starts to get thinner, and the path becomes even a little steeper. Next follows a quite steep ascent, which at first runs through some lanes of dwarf pines, and higher over steep grassy slopes, which are mainly in wet dangerous for slipping. Further, we cross a slightly exposed gully, where there is a smaller memorial, and the path is then for few minutes ascending on a steep grassy slope. When a little higher slope flattens a little, marked path turns to the left and crosses slopes towards the left. Only few minutes ahead we get to a smaller valley, where the slope flattens even more.
Here the marked path which leads on Veliki vrh crosses a small valley, and we just continue on a small valley upwards, where at first we still follow rough footpath. A little higher we go slightly to the right, after that in 10 minutes of additional walking on easier pathless terrain we ascend to the summit of Begunjska Vrtača.
