Fiames - Punta Fiames

Access to starting point:
Over the border crossing Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio, where we go on a highway in the direction of Videm / Udine. We leave the highway at exit Tolmezzo and we follow the road to the mentioned settlement. From Tolmezzo we continue in the direction of the settlement Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo della Mauria. The road then starts descending and brings us into a valley Cadore, where we continue right (left Belluno and Cortina d'Ampezzo) in the direction of the settlement Auronzo. After few additional km of driving, we come to the next bigger crossroad, where we go right in the direction of the settlement Misurina (left mountain pass Tre Croci). From here we descend on the road to a bigger crossroad where we continue left towards Cortina d'Ampezzo (right Austria). Few kilometers before Cortina d'Ampezzo we come in the settlement Fiames. At the very beginning of the settlement Fiames (at the sign, which marks the settlement) we will on the left (eastern) side of the road notice a smaller parking lot on which we park. And on the right side of the road is situated hotel and few more parking lots.

Path description:
From the parking lot, we go on a marked path through the forest in the direction towards the southeast. After a short ascent, we come on a macadam road on which we continue right. The mentioned road, we quickly leave and we go left upwards following the signs »Ferrovia, Ferrata Strobel«. Here the path is slightly ascending through the forest and then joins another macadam road (path 208), which is very popular among cyclists. We continue right on a gently sloping macadam road and already after few meters the path branches off to the left towards the secured climbing path Via Ferrata Strobel. We still walk on a macadam road all the way to a marked crossing where signposts point us to the left in the forest on the path 218 following the signs »Punta Fiames«.
The path further runs mostly through a pine forest towards the south and from the path several times a view opens up on the mountain group Tofana and through a valley of river Boite. Such a path then brings us to a crossing where from the right side joins the path from the settlement Vera.
At the crossing, we continue left and we start ascending a little steeper. The path then brings us out of the forest into dwarf pines and increasingly beautiful views start to open up on surrounding peaks. When we get closer to the walls of peaks path turns right and crosses slopes towards the southeast. On the path we cross also some torrent gullies, and then we soon come to a marked crossing.
Right downwards leads the path 202 towards the settlement Vera, straight leads the path 218, and we go left upwards on the path 202 towards the notch Forcella Pomagagnon. The path further is ascending on the scree by rarer dwarf pines and it brings us to another marked crossing.
The path Terza Cengia branches off to the right (only for experienced), and we continue left upwards and we look for a passage, which crosses a riverbed of a torrent (we get help from cairns). The path is then long time ascending on the scree upwards and later few more times crosses some riverbeds, and at the crossing of those some caution is needed. From the path which runs on a wide gully below the steep mountain walls of the peak Croda del Pomagagnon we have otherwise all the time a nice view towards the precipitous walls above us and towards the mountain group Sorapiss. The path through the gully runs on the scree all the way to the notch Forcella Pomagagnon where a view opens up on the north towards the summit Croda Rossa.
On the notch, we continue left and then we in a gentle ascent cross slopes on the north side of the peak Punta Fiames. In the last part, the path turns left and follows an ascent on a rocky slope to a panoramic summit.
We descend on the ascent route or on a little longer but less steep path, which from a notch Forcella Pomagagnon descends on the northern side through the valley Val Pomagagnon.
