Access to starting point:
First, we drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo (to here possible over a border crossing Rateče or Predel to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then on a highway in the direction of Videm / Udine to exit Tolmezzo. From Tolmezzo we follow the road in the direction of village Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo Mauria. The road then descends and it brings us to a crossroad, where we continue left (possible also right) in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At all next crossroads, we follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo. Or from Primorska side, where we drive on a highway in the direction of Trst / Trieste. Further, we drive on Italian highway in the direction of Padova, but only to a highway junction, where we continue in the direction of Veneto and Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends, and at the next crossroads we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo and then we follow the signs for Alpine mountain pass Passo di Falzarego. This ascending road we then follow to a crossroad at an altitude of approximately 1400m. At the crossroad, we continue left in the direction of Alpine mountain pass Passo di Giau and Marmolada. We follow this road all the way to the parking lot below the mountain pasture Malga Giau. The parking lot is located on the right side before the sharp right turn at an altitude of approximately 1960 meters.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the main road, at the right turn we can go straight on a shortcut through the pasture or we continue on the main road. If we continue on the road, at the left turn right upwards a road towards the mountain pasture Malga Giau branches off, and we continue good 200 meters on the road where we will then on the left side notice signposts and the beginning of the footpath. A little before the beginning of the mentioned footpath on the right side of the road there is another smaller parking lot.
We go on the mentioned footpath in the direction towards the notch Forcella Giau. The path at first crosses pastures towards the south and also slightly descends. Next follows crossing of a little swampy terrain where from the left joins the mentioned shortcut. We still continue straight and we again start ascending. Further are then taking turns grassy slopes and lanes of thin larch forest, and the path still runs towards the south. A little higher, when we get closer to slopes of the peak Monte Formin we come to a crossing where from the right side joins the path from the mountain pass Passo Giau.
At the crossing, we continue straight towards the notch Forcella Giau and from the path increasingly beautiful views starting to open up on the mountain groups Tofana and Sella. Such a path then brings us to the already mentioned notch where a view towards the south opens up, where Monte Pelmo stands out.
On the notch where there is a crossing a well-beaten path 436 towards the saddle Forcella Ambrizola branches off to the left, and we go right on a poorly visible path 465. Poorly visible path here starts descending on grassy slopes and it brings us to a crossing.
The marked path here turns to the right towards the valley Val Cernera, and we go slightly left on unmarked archaeological path which leads past large boulders towards a small lake Lago delle Basti, which can be seen from the path for quite some time. The path continues to descend all the way to the mentioned lake.
On the other side of the lake where the path towards the mountain pasture Malga Mondeval di sopra and archaeological finds from the Mesolithic turns to the left, we go to the right on even less visible path by the ridge. Further, we are ascending by the ridge towards the summit Corvo Alto. The path runs on left eastern side of the ridge, where slopes are grassy and not that steep, right western side of the ridge is precipitous. We still continue on the path with beautiful views by the ridge all the way to the top.
On the way: Forcella Giau (2360m), Lago delle Baste (2281m)
