Access to starting point:
From Kranjska Gora over the border crossing Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio. Further, we drive on the old road towards Videm / Udine. Already after few kilometers from Trbiž / Tarvisio, the road into Ovčja vas / Valbruna branches off to the left. Here we turn left and we follow the road all the way to the mountain pasture Zajzera, where we park on a large parking lot.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we go on the path following the signs Rifugio Grego. The path is all the time ascending through the forest and in one hour brings us to the hut, which stands on the mountain pasture from which is a very nice view towards the northern wall of Montaž.
From the mountain hut, we descend a little on a macadam road to a saddle Rudni vrh (Sella di Somdogna) on which runs also an asphalt road from the valley Dunjska dolina. We continue on the asphalt road on which we descend few turns, and then we leave the road and go right on a narrow marked footpath.
The path starts steeply ascending through dwarf pines, crosses few torrents and it brings us to a crossing.
Right runs the path on Pipar (2069 meters) and we continue left on the path 468 towards the bivouac Bernardinis. The path further runs through already little overgrown dwarf pines, and then turns a little to the left. The path then descends a little and later crosses pretty steep and crumbly slopes below Piparji. Soon from the left side joins the path 605, which also comes from the valley Dunjska dolina, but from a little lower starting point. The path turns a little to the right and starts ascending towards the notch Forcella Cianalot (1830m).
At the saddle we go to the left and then follows 20 more minutes of ascent through rare dwarf pines and grassy slopes to bivouac Ricovero Bernardinis.
From the bivouac ahead, the path becomes very interesting, at first we are ascending on grassy slopes by which there are a lot of ruins from the first world war, after that follows tunnel through the eastern peak of Dve špici (Cima Vildiver). While crossing the tunnel we need a lamp because a winding tunnel is long 70 meters. From the tunnel we come on the northern slopes of the mountain from where on a quite steep crumbly slope between the both peaks we descend on the south side. Here the path at first runs through the natural window, and then on a 150 meters long carved ledge in the vertical south wall of western peak (Cima Alta).
The path on the ledge is secured with a steel cable, which is usually in quite bad condition. On some spots, we have to be especially careful, because on the path, there is quite a lot of the slippery sand. The path on the ledge then brings us on the western slopes of the mountain, where we come to a crossroad. We go right following the signs Due Pizzi (Dve špici) and the path at first through dwarf pines and then over a grassy slope in 15 minutes brings us on the western peak of Dve špici.
