Access to starting point:
At first, we drive to Kranjska Gora, and then we continue driving towards Rateče. At the crossroad, where the road to Planica branches off to the left, and right to Rateče, we continue straight. We drive into Rateče at the next crossroad, which is located few 10 meters in front of a gas station. At the restaurant Mojmir we continue straight and then after 10 meters sharply left on the road in the direction of Tromeja. The road then ascends above the village, and we park at an appropriate place by the road.
Path description:
From the starting point, we continue on the road by which we've parked, and it soon turns considerably right and then it is ascending diagonally towards the east. With a view on peaks of the Julian Alps, the road gradually flattens and brings us on a less noticeable crossing, where the unmarked path branches off to the left, which higher joins the marked path from Italy.
On the mentioned crossing, which is located before the road passes into the forest, we go left and we continue on a footpath which is ascending diagonally through a panoramic meadow. For some time we are ascending by the edge of the forest and then the footpath widens into a cart track, and it passes into the forest and takes us on the Italian side of the border. From here we walk few 10 strides, and then we join the marked path from Italy (starting point Pri Jalnu / Fusine Laghi).
Further, we are ascending diagonally towards the northwest, and the path leads on an old mule track, which higher joins the macadam road. When we step on the road, we continue sharply right, and it ascends on a smaller saddle, after which the road towards the summit Kavalar (also Kavalarka) / Monte Cavallar branches off to the left, and we continue straight on the road which starts moderately descending. For some time we are descending on the road, by which we notice numerous warnings, that we are not allowed to leave the road, because otherwise we would step on private property. After a short descent at first road towards Marija Snežna / Madonna della Neve (on a sign Maria im Schnee) branches off to the left, and few meters ahead to the right road towards Kopa / Monte Coppa (1497 meters).
From the second crossing we continue sharply right in the direction of Kopa / Monte Coppa (straight Peč (tromeja)) and we continue on a narrower road which is further ascending through a dense forest. Higher, the road leads past the abandoned buildings (buildings from the time of Rapallo border), and a little further also to a statue of Holy Mother of God. Here the road turns sharply to the left and then gradually changes to at first a wide cart track. At the crossing of cart tracks few minutes above the statue of Holy Mary we continue left and we continue on a moderately steep cart track. Further, occasionally a view opens up a little on Julian, Carnic and Gailtal Alps, but the path mostly runs through a dense forest. A little below the summit, we get to some buildings of former Rapallo border, and here also ends until now quite rare blazes.
We continue on an unmarked cart track which quickly ends, and from the end of the cart track, we continue right on an indistinct ridge, on which in few steps we get to the top of Kopa.
