Access to starting point:
Access from Gorenjska: From Rateče or Predel we cross the border to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then we continue on the highway in the direction of Videm / Udine to exit Tolmezzo. From Tolmezzo we follow the road in the direction of village Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo Mauria. The road then descends and it brings us to a crossroad, where we continue left (possible also right) in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At all next crossroads, we follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo.
In Cortina d'Ampezzo then we follow the signs for Alpine mountain pass Passo di Falzarego. This ascending road we then follow to the mentioned mountain pass, and then we continue right towards the mountain pass Passo Valparola. On the mountain pass, we park on one of the parking lots near the mountain hut Rifugio Valparola.
From Primorska: We drive on the highway towards Venice / Benetke / Venezia. At town Portogruaro we leave the highway towards Venice and continue right on the highway towards Pordenone. At the next highway junction near Conegliano, we continue right towards Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends and at the next crossroads we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Further, we follow the description above.
Path description:
From the mountain hut Rifugio Valparola we continue towards the southwest following the signs »Settsass, Col di Lana«. After that, the path crosses grassy slopes on the right side of the lake Lago di Valparola and it brings us to a crossing. We continue left on the path number 23, right leads the path number 24 towards the summit Setsas.
From the crossing, the path slightly descends on a grassy slope and then brings us on little steeper slopes on the south side of the ridge of peaks Setsas and Le Pale de Gerda. On a shorter part, we also get help from fixed safety gear. The path then starts slightly ascending and crosses slopes towards the west. From the path, we have all the time a nice view towards precipitous south walls of the peak Setsas, we can also clearly see the ridge of peaks Monte Sief and Col di Lana. The path then soon brings us to a signpost, where there is a crossing. At the signpost, which marks historical trail Percorso storico Col di Lana we leave the marked path and we continue slightly right upwards.
From the crossing, the path ascends diagonally and brings us below precipitous walls of peaks Le Pale di Gerda. This path was in the past marked, so by the path, we can still notice also some faded a blaze. Further, we are ascending by the mountain walls and from the path, we have already nice view towards the summit Pico Setsas. The path here is at first still mostly grassy, and higher it ascends also through some scree. In the last part of the ascent towards the saddle between the peaks Pico Setsas and Setsas the slope again becomes entirely grassy.
On the saddle, we cross the fence and also the path from the western side joins. We continue left by the fence and we ascend towards the slope of the peak Pico Setsas. Grass soon ends and then follows a little steeper ascent towards the summit. Here we will by the path also notice some remains from the time of the first world war. A short ascent follows on the stairs and a very nice view opens up on all sides. To the very peak where there is a smaller cross follows only few meters of steep ascent where we also have to use hands.
