We drive into Kranjska Gora, where we continue driving left in the direction of Vršič or Bovec. Only a little before the 3rd hairpin turn of road Ruska cesta or Vršiška cesta, we will by the road notice a smaller parking lot, where we park. On the opposite side of the road, we can see the cross, and few meters ahead on the left side a turn-off of the forest road and signposts for Koča v Krnici. We can also descend on the mentioned worse macadam road towards Suha Pišnica where there is also a little larger parking lot. Few parking lots are also a little ahead by the main road between the 4th hairpin turn and Mihov dom.
To the starting point, we can also come from Primorska side through the mountain pass Vršič.
Path description:
We go on a bad macadam road which immediately starts moderately descending through the forest. Right upwards soon a path branches off which leads towards Mihov dom and ahead on Vršič. We continue on the road which is descending and after few minutes it brings us to the parking lot near the riverbed of Suha Pišnica. Here by the parking lot there is also a drinking water. We continue right past the parking lots and then we continue on the road which is further closed for public traffic.
The road here at first crosses the stream Suha Pišnica and then turns slightly to the left and it brings us out of the forest on ample grassy slopes of the mountain pasture V Klinu, where on the right we notice a lonely hut, and on the left a smaller memorial park Mali Tamar. The path ahead entirely flattens, and then it joins the forest road which comes from the former hotel Erika or bridge over Velika Pišnica. Here we continue right, and we soon come to a crossing where the footpath branches off to the right towards Koča v Krnici. We go right on the mentioned path, which further leads in light ascent through the forest, mostly it is pleasantly soft, only here and there a little more rocky. A little before the mountain hut, we again join the macadam road and then follows only a short walk to the hut.
From the mountain hut, we go left in the direction of Špik (straight - Kriška stena) and we short time still walk on a gentle path through the forest. After that, the path crosses two smaller riverbeds of a torrent, and at the next wider riverbed the path turns slightly to the right and is then for quite some time ascending by the riverbed. Here we are mostly ascending through dwarf pines, and from the path, we have a nice view mainly towards Prisank and Razor. Higher, the path crosses the riverbed to the left side and ascends on a steeper slope. When dwarf pines become a little thinner, the marked path turns to the left, and by the path, we will notice a large rock with the caption „Špik 3h“.
Here we leave the marked path towards Špik and we continue straight parallel with the riverbed. By the path, we will also notice few cairns. For some time we still continue slightly left from the riverbed where there is also a visible but a little worse beaten footpath. The slope above the riverbed on which we walk is on some spots a little washed out also some caution is needed. From the mentioned footpath we then soon descend right into the gully of a torrent on which we continue the ascent. Further, we for quite some time still follow the riverbed of a torrent and we are ascending over numerous rocks and boulders. Higher our path turns firmly to the right and on a poorly visible footpath comes from the gully. We also get help from well visible cairn, which is situated right above the gully. While crossing on the mentioned footpath also some caution is needed, because on the path, there is quite a lot of a slippery sand.
From the gully we then continue on more vegetated terrain and we cross a lane with more larches, after that the path turns to the left and it starts steeply ascending through dwarf pines. On this part we will by the path also notice some old blazes. Higher the dwarf pines is becoming thinner and the path turns a little to the left and it brings us on the scree below the walls of Škrlatica. Next follows quite strenuous and steep ascent on a footpath which runs on the scree. The steepness further decreases a little and below the slopes of Visoka Ponca we can already see the bivouac. We soon get to a poorly visible crossing where we go left towards the bivouac, and straight leads the footpath towards the gable of valley and ahead on Visoka Ponca.
We ascend a little steeper again and we soon get to the ledge secured with a steel cable, which leads to the bivouac. We go on the mentioned ledge and after a shorter crossing follows few more meters of a little more demanding ascent by the steel cable, which brings us to the bivouac.
