Access to starting point:
From the direction Ljubljana:
From the main road towards Domžale at the traffic light we turn left towards "Trzin - Mlake". Immediately after the turn-off we turn right on road Ljubljanska cesta and we drive towards the newer part of Trzin. Just before the road leads over the bridge over Pšata, we turn left on a narrow road Za hribom, which leads to an old village center of Trzin and church of St. Florijan. Right before we reach the church, on the right we notice a parking lot and before it a large sign for Forest learning trail Onger.

From the direction Domžle:
Main road towards Ljubljana we leave in Trzin at the traffic light turn-off towards Mengeš, Kamnik, Kranj. Immediately after the turn-off we turn left on road Ljubljanska cesta and we drive through a newer part of Trzin. Immediately after the bridge over Pšata we turn right on a narrow road Za hribom, which leads to an old village center of Trzin and church of St. Florijan. Right before we reach the church, on the right we notice a parking lot and before it a large sign for Forest learning trail Onger.

From the direction Mengeš:
If we don't know well the area of Trzin by road Mengeška cesta, it is best, if we drive on the road Mengeš - Trzin to the last traffic light crossroad before the junction on the main road Ljubljana - Domžale. Here we turn right on the road Ljubljanska cesta and we drive through a newer part of Trzin. Immediately after the bridge over Pšata we turn right on a narrow road Za hribom, which leads to an old village center of Trzin and church of St. Florijan. Right before we reach the church, on the right we notice a parking lot and before it a large sign for Forest learning trail Onger.

From the center of Trzin we can reach the parking lot on foot on a footbridge over Pšata near the Trzin primary school. Unlike the other Trzin parking lots this isn't payable and parking time limited.
Path description:
At the parking lot we on pedestrian crossing cross the road Za hribom, we turn left and immediately go on stairs, which branch off slightly towards the right. At the end of the stairs we turn left. Already after few meters mildly towards the right another stairs branch off. Next to the second bench on those stairs (not far from the end) to the right a short, but harder passable shortcut branches off. If on the stairs, we continue to the end, we then turn sharply to the right on the road which is steeply ascending upwards. Forest learning trail otherwise officially starts a little further on this road next to a water storage, but we leave the road already few meters further at first sharp left turn, where we can on the right notice turn-off of a narrow footpath into the forest. From here further all the way to the castle we walk through the forest. Soon from the right joins the already mentioned shortcut.

The footpath is initially quite steeply ascending. After about 200 meters we reach a macadam forest road, where (actually in the reverse direction as the official) we join the forest learning path, which is on some trees "marked" with signs with names of the trees. The road is for some time still ascending on the hill Onger (which separates the center of Trzin and area Mlake) and after about 500 meters reaches the highest point, whereupon it slowly starts to descend. On our left is almost we can almost all the time through the trees see Mengeš field. A little further there is a point "Razgledišče", where there is also a bench, and offers also the most beautiful views over Mengeš field towards Domžale, Kamnik, Mengeš...

A little further from the viewpoint the macadam road suddenly ends. From the left joins the western branch of the learning trail (which also starts at the before mentioned water storage), and we continue straight on a well-beaten footpath. Here and there we run into few more turn-offs, but we have to stick to the most beaten path and direction towards the north, and in doing so almost all the time we have a view towards the east on Mengeš field. The path is still lightly descending. When through the trees we already see the castle, follows few more turn-offs. The castle we reach on any of them.

From the castle we can continue towards other destinations, or we can return into Trzin on the road just below the hill or again on the same path, when the footpath becomes a macadam road, we can optionally go right on the western branch of the learning trail, which is a parallel and only few meters distant from the before described eastern branch, and it brings us to the water storage in Mlake.
