Access to starting point:
If we drive on the highway along the river Inn, we go to the exit Innsbruck-Mitte. If we were already in Innsbruck, we drive towards the south of Innsbruck towards the entrance on the highway Innsbruck-Mitte, but we don't go on the highway. Then we follow the signs for Igls or Innsbruck-Igls, and higher the signs for cableway Patscherkofelbahn. We park by the bottom station of this cableway (a large parking lot) and with a cable car we go to the upper station.
Path description:
From the upper station of the cableway Patscherkofelbahn we go towards the east, on the tourist path Zirbenweg ("stone pine trail"; stone pine is a rare species of a pine). It undemandingly leads us over the northern slopes of Patscherkofel on open terrain, with lush vegetation of rhododendron. Occasionally far at the back a distinct rock spike of the peak Sonnenspitze shows up and right from it, a small saddle, which is our final destination. To the distinct saddle Boscheben (2035 meters) eastern below Patscherkofel we gain only a few altitude meters (on the saddle to the right there is a turn-off for eponymous mountain hut, to which there is few minutes of gentle walking). To here 0:45.
We continue on forest traverse and then a little more diverse up-down on rocky terrain. Soon after that, somehow 20 minutes of walking from the saddle Boscheben, we get to a small valley, where there is a crossing of paths: tourist path Zirbenweg turns distinctly left, and our path continues straight (a sign for Glungezerhütte). From the crossing, we are ascending at first mildly on the bottom of the small valley, and soon steeper on its left slope. Higher, the path again flattens and there we cross to the right around the peak Viggarspitze (possible also a quick visit of this peak; approx 15 minutes of ascent). Next follows a long, steady, easy ascent on unvegetated, southwestern slope on a mostly rocky path.
In the last third of the tour, the path finally ascends a little steeper. After the passage through the last clearing on the last 150 of entirely rocky altitude meters we ascend in zig-zags. When on the saddle, we look over the edge, we see the mountain hut Glungezerhütte. To there leads a short passage through a small valley.
Two additional suggestions: From the mountain hut there is possible a fast and easy ascent on both nearby peaks. On more rounded Glungezer (10 minutes; from the peak view opening up along the ridge towards the south; on the secondary peak there is a memorial in the memory of a plane accident in the year 1964 - look the description of the mountain hut) we ascend behind the cottage in the direction of southeast. On a more boldly Sonnenspitze (10 minutes; a great view towards the north) we go from the bivouac, which stands by the mountain hut, in the direction of west.
On the way: Patscherkofel (2246m), Boscheben(hütte) (2035m), Viggarspitze (2306m), Sonnenspitze (2639m), Glungezer (2677m)
