Access to starting point:
A) First, we drive to Kamnik, and then we continue driving in the direction of the Črnivec pass. Just a few 100 m before the mentioned pass we notice signs for Kranjski Rak, which direct us sharply left onto a narrow and at first also quite steep road. The road higher up flattens and then brings us to the Volovljek pass, where near the inn Kranjski Rak we also park (parking in front of the inn is allowed only for guests). A little more space for parking is near the inn Štajerski Rak.
B) From Gornji Grad we drive towards Kamnik, then just a few 100 m after the Črnivec pass we continue right in the direction of Kranjski Rak. Further, we follow the above description.
C) From the Savinjska valley we first drive to Luče, and then we continue driving towards Kamnik. When we arrive at the Volovljek pass we park at a suitable spot near the inn Kranjski Rak (parking in front of the inn is allowed only for guests). A little more space for parking is near the inn Štajerski Rak.
Path description:
From the Volovljek pass we first walk to the snack bar Štajerski Rak (the snack bar is situated on the eastern side of the Volovljek pass, on maps Štajerski Rak is marked at the spot where the homestead Štajerski Rak used to stand).
From the snack bar Štajerski Rak we continue on the forest road, which starts gently to moderately ascending through the forest. During the diagonal ascent on the road, the path mostly leads us on the northwestern slopes of Kranjska reber, from which occasionally a nice view opens up on Podvolovljek and the mountains above the mentioned valley. Higher the forest temporarily ends and a view opens up on the highest peaks of the Kamnik and Savinja Alps, the road turns a little to the right and brings us to the area named Na kalu, where there is a marked junction.
Here to the right branches off the marked path to Kranjska reber, straight ahead the road continues, by which we can reach the Črnivec pass, but we continue left, on the road in the direction of Lepenatka. Further, the road descends diagonally on the eastern slopes of Kašni vrh, from where on some spots a nice view opens up towards Menina planina. When the road turns sharply to the left and changes into a cart track, we leave it and continue straight into the forest with the path. Through the forest we descend for some time, thereby descending over a short drop. Lower we reach the forest road, which we follow straight ahead, then, when the road from the ridge turns slightly to the right, we continue straight on the ascending cart track, along which there are also blazes. The cart track first ascends more steeply along the ridge, then from it slightly to the left and downward an unmarked cart track branches off, which after a shorter diagonal descent joins a forest road, by which it is possible to continue towards Bivak na Kalu, but we continue straight, first still briefly along the cart track, then slightly right on the marked footpath. The path immediately starts to ascend steeply, soon turning a little more to the right, where it ascends diagonally across a steeper slope. Further, the path ascends steeply, occasionally also leading us through some shorter exposed section, where especially in wet conditions and snow greater caution is needed. Higher the slope gradually flattens, the path turns right and brings us to the ridge east of Kunšperski vrh (also Brezovec).
When we reach the ridge we continue right (left Kunšperski vrh, 5 minutes of easier pathless terrain) along the marked path, which continues along the occasionally panoramic ridge. Further, we ascend gently to moderately along or slightly left of the ridge. Higher the path leads over a grazing fence, behind which we step onto the summit grassy slopes of Lepenatka. There follows a few minutes of moderate ascent along the path, from which beautiful views open up, reaching from the nearby Veliki Rogatec, across Raduha and Olševa, to the highest peaks of the Kamnik Savinja Alps, and we already reach the grassy summit of Lepenatka.
From the summit of Lepenatka we continue a few dozen steps along the ridge, then at the marked junction left downward in the direction of the Kal saddle and Veliki Rogatec. There follows approximately 15 minutes of moderate descent along at first quite panoramic grassy slope, then we arrive at the Kal saddle, where there is a marked junction.
From the junction we continue straight in the direction of the climbing path to Veliki Rogatec (left Bivak na Kalu 1 minute, slightly right Rogatec past Zgornji Špeh, right sv. Lenart). The path ahead turns slightly left and brings us to the entry into the climbing section. There follows a steep ascent on the slope, which is partly rocky, partly grassy, then the path turns slightly right, where it continues steeply ascending, this time through sparse forest. Higher the path brings us to the ridge, from which a nice view opens up on the Kamnik and Savinja Alps. We continue left, where first a few pegs assist us, then we ascend along the unsecured and partly precipitous ridge. After a few minutes the ridge passes into forest, through which it ascends steeply several times. Higher the forest begins to thin, a little below the summit we step completely out of the forest, and only a few dozen steps with nice views separate us from the nearby summit.
The climbing section of the path is technically not overly demanding, but it is not secured and is therefore very dangerous for slipping when wet.
Volovljek - Lepenatka 2:15, Lepenatka - Bivak na Kalu 15 minutes, Bivak na Kalu - Veliki Rogatec 50 minutes.
