Description of mountain:
Hohe Geige is with height between 3393 and 3396 meters one of the highest and the most important peaks in the northern part of Ötztal Alps. As the highest peak of one of the central groups of the mountain range Geigenkamm, it is well visited, the reason for this is also relative straightness of otherwise attractive approach on the western ridge and the fact, that it is one of the highest peaks in Austria, on which in high season it is usually possible to ascend without winter equipment.
Because Hohe Geige with the exception of individual sharp towers of parallel mountain range Kaunergrat, by height it exceeds all the peaks in northern part of Ötztal Alps, it serves as eminent viewpoint: especially attractive are views towards deeply below us situated valley Pitztal and bold Kaunergrat above it, which has some of the most difficult reachable peaks in Austria, a unique view on the mighty glaciers of the main (highest) part of the mountain range, above which reigns Wildspitze, and the highest peaks of Stubai Alps led by Zuckerhütl, which are spreading on the east.
In spite of that, that the normal path on Hohe Geige technically don't reach the difficulty, such as is typical for highest peaks of neighbouring Kaunergrat, all the approaches on the mountain are still very difficult, the latter is also very crumbly. The classic approach via the south wall ("normalweg") is in the view of objective danger due to great crumbliness, in last years less and less recommended, therefore recommended ascent and descent is on the western ridge on the route of a former easier alpinist route, which is today on the key spots secured.
