Description of mountain:
Timios Stavros, 2456 m, is the highest peak on Crete island in Greece (and also among all the other Greek islands), and with the highest topographical prominence in Greece (the second in Greece is Mytikas, a 2918 m high mountain, with prominence of 2353 m). The mountain is also listed as Ultra.
Timios Stavros is the name of the peak and the chapel on the mountain top. The whole mountain massif is called Psiloritis (gr. Ψηλορείτης). The mountain is also known as Mount Ida.
Neighboring peaks are Agkathias (gr. Αγκαθιάς) and Stolistra (gr. Στολίστρα). Agkathias, 2424 m, is situated to the southeast (30-minute walk), and Stolistra, 2325 m, is situated to the northwest. To the north, you can see the Aegean Sea, and to the south, the Libyan Sea.
Lefka Ori (gr. Λευκά Όρη) is another mountain range approximately 100 kilometers to the west of Crete. The highest peak there is Pachnes (gr. Πάχνες), also an Ultra mountain. It is 2453 meters high, only 3 meters lower than Psiloritis. Some recent measurements claim that this difference is even smaller. It is possible that the title of the highest mountain will be contested some day in the future, since the seismological activity is strong in Crete.
